The Pre-show

What to expect on New Year's Eve? Do you really want to be at concert? Or, would you rather be able to hangout with friends at a party? Well, the best of both worlds was offered at the Keswick Theatre.

Before the concert started, radio station WMGK 102.9 sponsored a party in the lobby. At first, it was sparse. But before long, the crowd started arriving. There was video gaming, free food and drink and a chance to mix with friends before the music started. The prizes and give-aways were an extra bonus.

Devon Allman's Honeytribe

The warm-up band for the show was Devon Allman's Honeytribe. Devon is Gregg's son, who has created a jam band in the same vein. Honeytribe was formed during 1999 in St. Louis, Missouri. Devon sings and plays a wicked guitar. Marko Oyarzabal does the drumming and backing vox. Rounding out the trio is George Potsos on bass and backing vox.

They really got the crowd going with their saucy blues vibe. Though all the musicians were impressive, Devon really stood out as a guitarist extraordinaire. When you heard his raspy vocals, there was a striking similarity to his father. However, Devon stood on his own and is an artist in his own right. Perhaps that is why he surprisingly never took the stage at the same time with his dad. It would have been interesting to see them perform together.

The set was solid with quite a few ripping solos by all members of the band. A song from their album Torch, Mercy, Mercy was a fine example of a rollicking, southern fried, rocker. It's nice to see that rock is still alive.

Gregg Allman

The seven piece band put on a fine performance. The sound quality was astonishing -- clean, clear and crisp. It was Goldy Locks. Not too loud. Not too quite. Just right.

There is something about the sultry southern sound that just drips with lusciousness. They kicked off with I'm No Angel and continued with one sweet jam after another. As everyone was considering their New Year's resolution, Dreams seemed to take on a special meaning. There were quite a few highlights... maybe too many to mention them all.

The show was so smooth that time just slipped by and before you knew it, "3,2,1, midnight!" They went right into a nice soulful rendition of Auld Lang Syne followed by a rousing version of Whipping Post. You'd think that would have been it. But then, seeing how it was after midnight, they got the whole crowd singing Midnight Rider. Yes, they hit the spot. Definitely a good time was had by all.
